JCMG Breaks Ground on New Outpatient Surgery Center on West Edgewood

March 16, 2021 was a historic day for healthcare in Jefferson City. Community leaders joined Jefferson City Medical Group physicians and staff to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new JCMG Outpatient Surgery Center. The new surgery center will be a standalone facility on a six-acre plot of land at the junction of West Edgewood Boulevard and Harper’s Ferry Road.

Established in 1993, Jefferson City Medical Group (JCMG) has quickly grown to become one of Missouri’s largest independent multi-specialty groups and one of Jefferson City’s largest employers. JCMG employs more than 115 healthcare providers in 30 medical and surgical specialties, serving more than 70,000 people each year.

Physician leaders at JCMG have been considering a larger, more modern surgery center for years. The demand is quickly rising for outpatient surgery across the country as procedures are being redirected to the outpatient environment, which offers high-quality services at a lower cost than a hospital. The new outpatient surgery center will be easily accessible, convenient, and offer a high-quality, streamlined experience for patients and their families.

JCMG’s current Outpatient Surgery Center, located on the lower level of its main campus on Stadium Blvd., opened in 1998 and has served the Mid-Missouri community for over 20 years. As healthcare has shifted and outpatient needs grew, JCMG physicians determined the current space did not offer enough room for expansion and began planning to build a new facility.

JCMG’s new surgery center be a one-level, 28,000 square foot standalone facility with ample parking, an expanded waiting area, state-of-the-art surgical space, and covered entries and exits for patients and staff. The center will also include two 23-hour overnight suites.

Procedures and surgical services offered will include gastroenterology, orthopedic surgery, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, gynecological surgery, ENT surgeries, pain management procedures, plastic and reconstructive surgery, general surgery, and more.

This expansion benefits the Mid-Missouri economy as well. Over 88 percent of the expansion work was awarded to mid-Missouri companies, boosting local infrastructure. Upon completion, JCMG estimates that the expansion of their outpatient surgery program will add approximately 15-20 area skilled jobs, including 3-5 physicians, with an estimated $3 million increase in annual gross wages.

The facility represents one of the first major developments on West Edgewood, an area the City hopes to see grow. This project could help spur additional development in the future, which could bring more resources to the Jefferson City community.

At the groundbreaking ceremony on March 16, Jeffrey Patrick, M.D. (JCMG Board President) and George Carr, M.D. (JCMG Board Vice President), donned keepsake hard hats and posed with traditional golden shovels along with several other JCMG physicians and staff. For Dr. Patrick and Dr. Carr, the ceremony was a trip down memory lane. Both were also present at the original groundbreaking for the main JCMG campus in 1998.

JCMG will repurpose the existing surgery center space at the Stadium Boulevard campus after the new facility is built. The group is currently exploring options and reviewing community needs. To learn more about JCMG’s Outpatient Surgery Center development, visit www.JCMG.org.
